Gala Golf Classic & Dinner at Hoylake with Les Ferdinand and Rob Lee
Our annual Gala Golf Classic goes from strength to strength, with last year’s event at Woburn attracting nearly 70 golfers who enjoyed a cracking schedule with former Premier League strikers John Hartson and Chris Sutton. This year we move to the incredible Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake, scene of Rory McIlroy’s famous 2014 Open triumph; our VIP guests for this prestigious event are former QPR, Newcastle Utd and Spurs prolific striker Les Ferdinand, and fellow former England international, and Charlton Athletic and Newcastle Utd legend Rob Lee. With a Gala dinner to follow an afternoon of golf, this is an event not to be missed, and the boys will no doubt have plenty of great tales to tell from their long careers at the top. The Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake: One of the most prestigious courses in the country, the Hoylake links can be, by turns, beautiful, uplifting, awe inspiring and, on occasion, soul-destroying. They were created to be a demanding test of golf and remain so, and they lie at the very heart of the history and development of golf in Great Britain. In 2014, the oldest Major returned to Hoylake for the twelfth time, Rory McIlroy clinching his first Open Championship and third major title with a two-shot victory over Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler on a thrilling final day at Hoylake. The Northern Irishman joined Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win three of golf's modern majors by the age of 25. This is your chance to follow in the footsteps of the greats. Les Ferdinand: One of the Premier League’s most prolific strikers, Les currently lies 8th in the all-time list of goalscorers, with 149 goals to his name, one behind Michael Owen. In all competitions he netted over 200 times at senior level, with an average just under a goal every two games. Les played for a total of 6 different Premier League clubs, but his most prolific years were spent at his beloved QPR, Newcastle Utd and Spurs. Loved wherever he played, he is particularly fondly remembered by the Toon Army, where his two season spell was filled with goals. He played on 17 occasions for England, scoring 5 times, and was part of both the Euro ’96 and France ’98 squads – he would surely have won many more in other eras but was battling against Alan Shearer as a classic no.9. Since early 2015, Les has been Director of Football at QPR, where he continues to serve his first senior club with distinction. Rob Lee: Not many players become a legend at two clubs, but ask any Charlton Athletic or Newcastle Utd fan and they’ll concur that Rob features high up the pantheon of club greats. A combative but highly skilled midfielder, with an eye for a goal, Rob made almost 800 senior appearances as a pro, with well over 117 strikes to his name. A key player in Kevin Keegan’s side which finished second in the Premier League two seasons running, he was a model pro much admired by his contemporaries. At international level, Rob won 21 caps between 1994-98, scoring 2 goals, and featuring in the 1998 World Cup Finals against Columbia. Both of Rob’s sons are current professional footballers; Olly with Luton, and Elliot with Barnsley. Pete Graves: A passionate Newcastle United fan, Pete has enjoyed a swift rise through the broadcasting ranks to become one of the most recognisable faces on Sky Sports. After leaving university, Pete started his broadcasting career with the hospital radio show Radio Tyneside, before working in the local Metro Radio, and then ITV Tyneside as a sports reporter. Since 2009 he has worked at Sky Sports, mainly as a presenter, where his passion for football and knowledge of the game are amongst his greatest assets. Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa: Nestled amidst attractive gardens in the beautiful Wirral countryside, this 19th-century mansion was the first hotel in the region to have been awarded 3 AA Rosettes for its fine food. Situated in the unspoilt hamlet of Thornton Hough, the 4-star hotel has been stylishly extended to offer all modern comforts but still retains some striking original features, such as oak carvings and ornate ceilings. This is the perfect venue to enjoy our evening Gala Dinner with Les and Rob, after a hard day’s golfing! Caldy Golf Club: Playing at Caldy is one of the most rewarding golfing experiences one can enjoy on this beautiful Wirral Peninsula. Golfers from home and abroad are always welcome to come and share the Clubs challenging course, vast Practice Ground and excellent Clubhouse facilities. 1906 saw Jack Morris, the nephew of the famous Old Tom Morris draw up a plan for the Club's first 9 holes, with the course opened for play the following year. The first layout of a full 18 holes, designed by 5 times Open Champion James Braid, came into play in 1931. The tees and greens are built to USPGA specification, and the course presents a challenge to golfers of all abilities. What's Included?
